After 21 years with the same look, it was time for a remodel!

We rebuilt HOATalk from the ground up. Same community, same discussions, same history — but a faster, cleaner, and more modern experience.

What's new?

- Modern design works great on phones and more.

- Smarter AI search.

- Cleaner reading experience for long threads.

- Your posts can be edited for 5 minutes after posting to make corrections.

- All your existing posts and history are right there. Your old password still works too.

We hope you enjoy the new design!

Personally, I think it's a little too much blue. Colors can highlight items, a different fill for the "add new topic" button would help make it pop on the page.

It's great you have the posting rules prior to the reply and prior to posting a new topic.
I'm not sure that they will be seen, as members may focus on adding a topic or reply and not notice the icon.
Again, a different color fill that draws your eye to the icon could improve the rules being noticed and, hopefully, read.

Tim, Thanks for the feedback.

We're certainly open to all suggestions, as this is a very new design. You can also see it looks different on a phone than a PC, where the phone has less blue.

We'll think more about the color choices.
Thanks again.

Just checked the search function and the profile function.

One thing the old design had was an ability to look at past posts by an individual user.
If I recall correctly, it was under the profile menu along the lines of "view posts by user" allowing you to see your own past 100 (I think) posts or, by replacing the user name, those posts by a different user.

I can not seem to locate that function in the new design and searching by a members name does not provide the expected results.

This feature was very useful at times when a topic was updated or asked a different way by a user. Someone reading the post, believing that this question was asked before, could search posts by that member and find the topic. Once found, references and links back to the previous post (sometimes posts) could be done.

You're correct: That feature is not in the new design.

The new search is an AI search that looks for concepts instead of keywords. For example, if you search for "kitties causing trouble" you will find posts on issues with cats, kitties, and felines.

We could possibly add some hard match search filters, with one being username to find the concept only in posts by that user. Are there other filter fields you think would be useful beyond username?

A date range might be a good addition, as laws change and advice provided might have been good in 2000 but that same advice could be bad in 2026.

I am delighted that one can edit one's post for up to five minutes after submission. Thank you.

I wish the new design allowed users to bold, italicize or underline text via a clickable link. So many of the questions asked here require complicated answers. Being able to emphasize certain words or statements with bolding et cetera helps read-ability, IMO.

Tim: We re-designed the site color scheme to a milder slate blue to tone down the blue. Thanks for the feedback

Elle: Thank you for the feedback. Formatting of posts has been added to the roadmap for consideration. There's some tech issues around it, but we see your point and it does sound useful.

New design looks nice. The 5-minute edit window will be a godsend. Just testing to see if HTML-style italics, bold, and underline work the way (I think) I remember them. Hmm, also testing square brackets[1]. How about embedded links?

     Non-breaking spaces?

[1] which were a bit of a problem in the last generation.

I wonder if I retained my signature? (See below to find out, I guess)

Best regards,

BillD

(It looks like there are still a few bugs in the text editor. For instance, if I used HTML tags for bold, they don’t seem to appear in the editable text. Embedded links don’t seem to work, either. How about just a bare URL? http://www.google.coom/)

Hi Bill,

We added your comments on the editor to the roadmap for consideration on how best to allow formatting. Thank you for your feedback.

Tests for whether the new HOATalk software recognizes html italic, bold and underline commands:

Italicize test:
Four score and seven years ago

Bold test:
our fathers brought forth on this continent

Underline test:
a new nation

Edit (hurrah!):
HTML commands work, but they remain a lot of trouble to insert. Also if one then edits the post, the html commands have to be re-done (else they are lost).

I like the updated color screen.
I would still consider changing the fill color on the smiley face for posting rules to make it a little more eye catching.

Quoting was a helpful tool when responding to several issues/points of discussion in one post.
Other than copy and paste, I don't see how users can quote (as HOATalk did in this thread, showing it was a post) a posting.

Links - I looked up an old post with links and confirmed that the links work. However (at least on the desktop version of the site) there is no defining color indicating that a link exists. Holding the mouse over the link changes the arrow pointer to an index finger pointer indicating a link but one wouldn't know that just by looking at the post. Strongly recommend links in posts be in a different color.

Hi Tim,

To quote, just click [Reply to this post] on the post you want to quote. You'll get 2 edit boxes, one for the quote (where you can edit down to the part you want to quote), and one for your reply.

We'll consider the smiley face color idea. (maybe the same green as the [Add New Topic] button on the topic list page, to indicate it's clickable?)

On the links, I agree. I'll put that in the roadmap topic for post editing features.

Thanks again for the feedback.

NEW FEATURE JUST ADDED:

When you visit a post that got more replies since you last visited, it will auto-scroll you to the new reply you haven't seen yet.

We also added little scroll arrows on the top right you can click to page down or go back to top. Works on phone and PC/laptop.

We're trying to make it easier for our most active members to keep up with new posts and replies.

no html links, no photos, no way to block annoying posters like my self who just moan and groan. in short not even close to a modern messaging board.

A couple of bugs. I know that I should type my text into a local buffer and then copy paste it into the web page input field - but sometimes I don’t, and so I burned myself - nay, myself and humanity - the other day: I entered some text - exceptionally fine text, the kind that the Pulitzer people like, I had the ghost of freakin’ H. L. Mencken chuckling in my ear, it was *that* good! - into the input field, wondered “okay, do they support some kind of blockquote?”, hit the Help button, didn’t find what I wanted (ie, a short guide to the local markup), hit Back - and discovered that I - and you - and future generations - had been robbed of the immortal, prize-winning words I had entered. Mencken spat ectoplasm on the floor and flicked his cigar butt at my ear. It hurt!

Also, a quick reference to the supported markup / html would be real nice. Or more obvious, if it already exists.
